Very strong wind, dust. Truly I cannot get over the Tolstoy woman's audacity.
My new dress was delivered — pretty. At the promenade (black dress, vicuna garment). I do not know if it is the lack of people or my natural sadness that holds me.
I am so bored; I cannot study properly. There are moments when I want to weep. It is the fear of remaining in Nice that pursues me. And even if we stayed, what does it matter? There would be fewer interruptions to my studies. I truly cannot say whether I want to go or stay. Stay: sadness, boredom. Go: expense, interruption of studies. It is not so terrible — if one interrupts, one starts again in a week and all goes well again.
Because of circumstances — business in Russia, a lawsuit — we cannot leave Nice for the moment. Oh! my God, let the day of departure come! Where once I had a violent desire to stay, now I have an even stronger desire to leave Nice — not for the summer but forever.
I must think of my education — of singing, music, painting. Then at last I shall be grown, and I shall have to marry — but in Nice, with whom? There is nothing but riffraff, ruined men, gamblers — no one suitable. But I am afraid we have put down such roots here that it will be difficult for me to pull them out of Nice! Oh! help me, my God!
Tomorrow we are going on a picnic with the Howards at ten o'clock.
I must not be angry because I have no sign of hope of attaining...
But my life is gaiety, riches, noisy pleasures, balls, races, horses, shooting, picnics, society, glory, popularity. To be known everywhere — there, there is my life and my happiness. They are sitting in the dining room, chatting quietly, supposing me busy studying. They have no idea what is happening inside me! They do not know what my thoughts are now.
I must be either the Duchess of Hamilton (I desire that most, for God sees how much I love him) or sought after, known, esteemed, pursued, spoken of, living in the midst of the highest society's festivities — or a celebrity of the stage; but that career does not appeal to me as the other does. It is no doubt flattering to receive the homage of the entire world, from the lowest of the low to the sovereigns of the earth! But the other — the other, where I would have the one I love! That is quite another thing, and I prefer it.
Great lady, duchess — I would rather be among society than be the first celebrity in the world, for then I would be of another world; they would patronize me.
No, it is life in high society that attracts me, that I desire most in the world.
Oh! forgive me, my God, for such decided expressions. I ask You only not to punish me for my temerity (my thoughts follow one another with such rapidity!!).
No! no! Lord, You alone can give me happiness. Oh! give it to me. Give it to me. I implore You!!!!!!
