At the promenade (black taffeta dress, Dina's, pink hat — smart). I am in a series of old dresses. Today our reception day; many persons came — no one from society. It seems to me that with the purchase of the villa our acquaintances will change; I hope so at least. Madame Canepa consents to our conditions; they are only waiting for the authorization her husband must send her. Oh! what happiness, my God, if we can have this villa! I desire it so! At the promenade, a good many people. Gioia in striped unbleached oriental fabric — very pretty; she always looks at me.
Again today, during my lesson, the sound of his carriage overwhelmed me — how I regret not being at the window at that moment.
Gagarin came; we spoke of sea baths and we shall bathe at the same hour.
In the evening Maman, my aunt, Dina, and Markevitch to the Opera Farot for the ballet La Giocogliera and Il Ponte del Diavolo. The Duke must already be in Nice, for the pigeon shooting is next Thursday. I wish he were there. My God, my God, how I desire to know him — I have never in my life desired anything with more ardor. Oh! if he could love me!
Here is the plan that is in my head now: I should like to know the Souvoroffs, the Galves, and company — to be with them often, firstly because Mademoiselle de Galve pleases me enormously, and then because, being with them, I should be with the Duke — that is the great business, if one could make their acquaintance. It would not be difficult if I told Maman or my aunt my plan; they could make the Duke's acquaintance even at Monaco — but if I do not succeed, I would be ashamed for anyone to speak of it. What I want is, in truth, disagreeable. They would say to me: there's a fool — what has she invented? Whereas by saying nothing, even if I do not succeed, I shall not be ashamed. Although I have less chance this way, I entrust myself more to God, and everything is in His hands, and no one else's. If God wills it, He will do it without anyone's help. I have trust in Him. [In the margin: That is quite natural.]
