Abruptly, as I was passing through the public garden, I found myself face to face with the Duke.
He looked at me and I looked at him.
In my mind, I spoke to him thus:
— Now that no one sees me, I speak to you; I would like to make you understand through my gaze all that I feel for you.
He looked at me again with great curiosity and walked away slowly. I could have seen him longer by turning around, but I was content as it was.
When he crossed our path on his way back, Hélène, who was with me, said:
— Look, there is the Duke of Hamilton! He looks like a butcher!
No matter what she says, I believe she finds him attractive too!
I know from my own experience that one speaks like that of men one finds attractive.
I am satisfied with my English lessons (begun on 12 January 1872 in Nice, with Mlle Collignon) (Italian, 17 March 1872, with Micaletti).
