References in Diary
Marie goes «chez Maurice, où il y a une magnifique bête, couleur chocolat à l'eau, huit ans, grande et superbe» (024.0112, 25 September 1874); the deacon's friend Sauvais is to inspect it (024.0114), but on 27 September «le cheval de Maurice est vendu, je le regrette» (024.0135). On 29 September Maurice has not received his new horses, «il les promet superbes» (024.0162–024.0163). On 5 May 1875 Marie recalls the episode as a lesson: she had liked the horse, then the deacon, her aunt and her mother ran it down until «je doutai de moi, je doutai de tout, et maintenant si on me tue je ne saurais dire comment était ce cheval» (032.0301), an analogy for the Duke of Hamilton.
