Relevance to Marie

The Bashkirtseffs count him as an enemy. Marie: «La vieille vit pour le moment avec un certain Yonina, magistrat et notre ennemi. Il aimait ma mère et l'a demandée en mariage». Grand-papa had him swept out of the house by his servants, invoking «l'ombre de votre femme assassinée» (065.0601, 065/1876-08-29). A note in the printed edition says that Yonina's wife «s'est coupé le cou par jalousie» (065.0601, footnote 1). Marie's family suspects him and Mme Belli of working to keep Gritz from marrying, so that the fortune would not slip away from them (065.0682, margin, 065/1876-08-30). Uncle Alexandre undertakes to «envoyer au diable Yonina» (065.0606).
