Marie and this painting

Marie knows it as les Pommes de terre or les Ramasseurs de pommes de terre. On 15 August 1882, in a moment of bitterness about her own prospects, she writes that she wants something « tellement supérieur aux bûcherons et aux ramasseurs de pommes de terre dont on nous persécute en l'honneur de Bastien » (096.0082). On 27 April 1883, listing the exquisite sentimentality of everything Bastien-Lepage has painted, she allows an exception only for « les pommes de terre et le mendiant... Et encore... » (099.0228). On 3 May 1883 the potatoes are among the earlier canvases whose background did not show the heaviness of L'Amour au village (099.0335). On 15 September 1883 she names it with Les Foins as the two life-size pictures (101.0363).

» (102.0310; reader footnotes on both pictures).
