Who he is

An Englishman Marie watches in Rome in the winter of 1875-76 and calls «Frédéric». At first she takes him for Sir Frederic Johnstone, whom she had admired in Nice («J'ai encore vu… au Pincio, habillé de gris, … le beau sir Frédéric Johnstone», 051.0420, 6 January 1876); ten days later she knows that «Le Vrai Diable, sir Frédéric Johnstone est à Nice à présent. Celui d'ici lui ressemble beaucoup» (052.0213), and on 2 February she concludes: «Frédéric n'est pas Sir F. Johnstone… L'homme que je vois ici est le même que j'ai vu à Nice… celui qui est ici, nous le désignons sous le nom de Frédéric tout court» (053.0330-0332).

His real name comes a year later, back in Rome, from an English lady at the same hotel table: «Des dames anglaises que je voyais souvent avec Frederic… c'est une lady Cartier avec deux filles très fanées. Elles me racontent… que Frederic (M. Oliver) me nomma la dame blanche. Que ce même Frederic est venu de Vienne à Rome à cheval, que c'est un original» (068.0335, 28 December 1876; Mon Journal t.9 p.245). The t.9 index lists him as «Oliver (Frederic) : 245». Nothing more about him has been found.

Not to be confused with

Sir Frederic Johnstone. Marie first calls Johnstone «le Vrai Diable» (052.0213), then decides that the man she had nicknamed «le diable» in Nice was this Frédéric all along: «celui que je nommais le diable n'est pas sir Frédéric Johnstone, et … le diable est le même homme que je vois ici» (053.0330).
