Show in diary 16 mentions Overview
"M. Hayem, un amateur assez connu" (104.0141): the Paris collector who takes up Marie at the Salon of 1884. He is very probably Charles Hayem (Paris 1839 – Paris 1902), collector and patron, who gave forty-six paintings by living French artists and many art objects to the Musée du Luxembourg (Jewish Encyclopedia, "Hayem, Charles"; Musée d'Orsay, provenance of Gustave Moreau's L'Apparition, Hayem gift 1879) (0.9). The deciding detail is Marie's own: the day after Bastien-Lepage exhibited the portrait of his grandfather (Salon of 1874), "Hayem arrivait dans son atelier et lui commandait le portrait de son père à lui" (104.0141); Bastien-Lepage's portrait of Simon Hayem, a merchant and the collector Charles Hayem's father, is dated 1875 (Victorian Web, "Simon Hayem (M. Hayem)", National Gallery of Art, Washington). The Mon Journal t.16 index has only "Hayem (M.) : 194, 196, 205, 207-208, 210, 221, 228".Relevance to Marie
- 9 May 1884 (104.0141-0143): Emile Bastien-Lepage announces a visit with Hayem, who "a des Delacroix, des Corot, des Bastien et il a la spécialité de découvrir les futurs grands peintres"; he had noticed her pastel at the Salon of 1883 and Un Meeting at the Salon of 1884.
- 15 May 1884 (104.0170-0178): the visit; he wants the pastel of Dina, which she will not sell, talks of the medal "comme d'une chose presque certaine", and lets Emile know he will propose to buy something.
- 20-31 May 1884 (104.0264, 0275, 0278, 0293, 0306, 0330, 0474): takes her round the Salon, goes to see painters on her behalf about the medal ("Il a été voir Cazin, Henner, il ira trouver Renouf, Roll"), then cools; Marie turns against him, with antisemitic insults that are hers and must be translated as written.
- 2 June 1884 (104.0496): Marie is told he is always evasive ("louvoyant tout le temps").
- 15 June 1884 (104.0582-0583): advises her to ask 2,500 francs for Un Meeting.
