These ladies took a small ice-box to the rue Legendre. He had been wanting one that could be set near the bed.
Provided he does not think we lavish things on him to wheedle a painting out of him.
My own painting is sketched out in colour. But I am not strong. I must rest often by lying down, and when I [Words blacked out: get up each time] my head spins and for a few seconds I cannot see.
It is to such a point that I left a canvas at about five o'clock to go to the Bois through the deserted streets. All anyone speaks of to me is Bastien. It is a robust distraction for the summer season.
How hot it is! One is stupefied and all the silliest tunes fill one's head.
Claire has passed on to me like an obsession her two lines to Gounod's Air du soir...
"Jonas seated in his whale
Said: 'ah! how I should like to get out.'
It is charming — but nobody can tell me how it continues, and since that is so irritating, I compose the rest; you shall judge whether it is good.
Jonas seated in his whale
Said: Ah! how I'd like to get out — One may have all the leisure one needs, But staying in here makes me doubt; I've been here now for three whole days And start to find it rather bleak — Parted from my loves' sweet gaze, I'd leave! Oh, mother, hear me speak! Without considering my anguish vast — For if I'm ever outside this frame, This misshapen hull will have, at last, Driven me mad — or worse, all the same.

Notes

Gounod's Air du soir (Evening Song) — a popular parlour piece. Claire set absurd doggerel to its tune.
