I am sending them two little toys from Neuilly: Saint Anthony and his pig,1 with dedications — one for Jules and the other for Emile. He is going out — a turn in the Bois with his mother. This woman shares all my preoccupations, and often while dressing me she makes remarks that I was silently making to myself at that very same moment. Emile is in the country, working there on a landscape. The poor boy has everything on his shoulders now. He does not return until after nine in the evening, for there is no other train that way.

Cette femme prend part à toutes mes préoccupations, et souvent en m’habillant elle fait des réflexions que je suis entrain de faire tout bas en ce même moment. Emile est à la campagne, il travaille là à un paysage. Le pauvre garçon a tout sur les bras maintenant. Il ne rentre que le soir après neuf heures, car il n’y a pas d’autre train par là.

Je l’ai prié de venir avec moi et de me renseigner pour les lutteurs. Il sait parfaitement que je ne puis demander ce service à personne qu’à lui, et il sait ce que c’est que d’être arrêté quand on a un tableau en tête. Il m’a fait poser toute la journée. Sale bête va. Impossible à une femme jeune d’aller là seule et de parler à ces gens pour poser etc.
