The Canroberts to lunch, and then we go to the Exhibition in the Rue de Sèze. But before we go out there is a visit from the false Bastien. The real one left for Brittany yesterday, and the false one leaves this evening for four days. Nasty creature. No, there is nothing to be done; I do not interest him. Well, so much the worse; I do not care. What I want is to have talent. My God. And so there is nothing left but that. Dress, coquetry, none of it exists; I make myself look well, because that too is art and I could not go about frumpily dressed, but otherwise... This constant preoccupation makes me ugly and old; I bury myself, I shut myself up, and what will it bring me?Jeudi 12 juillet 1883 Les Canrobert à dejeuner et puis nous allons à l’Exposition de la rue de Sèze.
All that is superb to recount after genius has blossomed, but as things are! I do not think Benvenuto Cellini burning his furniture did as much as I do; I throw far more, and far better, into the flames, and what will I get for it?
He knew what it would come to, but I?!
If I could soon be rid of this picture of the urchins, I should go off to the country, real country, with wide horizons, moorland, no mountains, beautiful sunsets, grey ground, grasses and pink wild flowers... And space, space. And paint a large picture with an infinite sky... Grasses and wild flowers...
I forgot: Tony, who came yesterday, very pleased with my sculpture and with the large picture, which is roughed in; he still maintains that something beautiful can be made of it. As for the urchins, they are more or less where they were; I have done the same thing over ten times, and in the end there is not a single passage worth keeping...
I want to go off to the country and bury myself still deeper. Fool.
