Easter.
There is an impromptu gathering at our house.
My dresses have turned out badly, and all of that and the rest, and this obligatory trip to Russia that will interrupt me for a month… And I hate myself. I am ugly and I am stupid and I want to hide. My life is a succession of incoherences — without significance, without pleasure, without purpose. Art… If only I don't lose my sight.
The vernissage tomorrow. My painting is not on the cimaise, and my dress is ugly, and…
Come — this is mad and unworthy of me. Here is the truth.
I am to do my six urchins — full-length, life-size — at a street corner near a lamp-post. I shall be interrupted for a month by Russia, then return and finish them; that will probably take me through October. In October I leave for Jerusalem and shall stay… it will depend: if it is possible to do the painting there, I shall stay three or four months; if not, I shall stay a month and return in November or December with studies, to set out again for the south where I can paint my figures en plein air using the landscapes brought back. In January that will bring me to Paris, where I shall do the interior painting, smaller than life, whose idea was brought from Mont-Dore — l'Enfant de chœur. At the same time I shall push forward the statue, on which I can work all the time I am in Paris — that is, July, August, September and January, February, March. Yet I do not think the Enfant de chœur will be done if I do the Saintes femmes, and vice versa.
Poor child. Bastien is quite right — he is not only a profound, a refined, a great artist; he is also a man of very sound judgement.
He says I scatter myself — that I spend and exhaust myself over trifles, and that it is a great pity. What! It is up to me to be strong, and I cannot! Come now, let us see.
One must try. I want to concentrate. Mad child — do you not understand that this strength will give you everything you seek?
You want Bastien, Saint-Marceaux, what do I know. Be like them — be one of them — and you can. You must will it.
Ah — how good God is to make me think thus.
And all of this is full of tenderness for my qualities — I adore myself, I know myself, I appreciate myself. I am sensitive, I am great, I am good. I am enthusiastic and I want to be strong and calm. The one cannot go without the other.

Notes

L'Enfant de chœur (The Choir Boy): a planned interior painting, conceived during her stay at Mont-Dore. Les Saintes femmes (The Holy Women) refers to a projected biblical subject — the women at the tomb.
