Tony's letter naturally plays a great part; it is being shown to everyone. Nervo sends me a telegram of congratulations.

Cette lettre de Tony joue naturellement un grand role, on la montre a tout le monde. Nervo m'envoie une depeche de felicitations.

The Engelhardts, Tchernitsky — vulgo Cerny — to dinner, then Mademoiselle de Miranda with her father. This Miranda, attached to the Spanish embassy three years ago, has had reverses, hardships, something or other — there was a moment when he had gone completely under, and he is not yet back on his feet, only Maman thinks it proper to show kindness to people under attack. Les Engelhardt, Tchernitsky, vulgo Cerny, a diner, puis Mlle de Miranda avec son pere. Ce Miranda attache a l'ambassade d'Espagne il y a trois ans, a eu des revers, des miseres, je ne sais quoi il y a eu un moment ou il avait sombre tout a fait, et il n'est pas encore renfloue, seulement maman croit bien de se montrer gentille envers des gens attaques. A charge de revanche Seigneur.

But I went to Julian's this morning to have the good things repeated to me. It seems Bouguereau said to him: you have a Russian who sent something that is pas mal, pas mal.² And you know, Julian added, from Bouguereau's mouth that is enormous, when it is not a question of his own students. In short, it seems I shall have something like a mention.

Mais j'ai ete chez Julian ce matin, me faire repeter les belles choses. Il parait que Bouguereau lui a dit: vous avez une Russe qui a envoye quelque chose qui n'est pas mal, pas mal. Et vous savez ajoute Julian que dans la bouche de Bouguereau c'est enorme, quand il ne s'agit pas de ses eleves. Enfin il parait que j'aurai quelque chose comme une mention.

I bring little Brisbane home with me; her drawing was rejected.

J'emmene la petite Brisbane chez moi, son dessin a ete refuse.

It was no worse than another, but nobody bothered to push it through. In short, it is tiresome.

Ce n'etait pas plus mauvais qu'un autre mais on ne s'est pas donne la peine de le pousser. Enfin c'est ennuyeux.

And I am not cheerful, yet this success I had not expected — and one is so happy with a pleasant surprise…

Et je ne suis pas gaie, pourtant ce succes je ne m'y attendais pas et l'on est si heureux d'une bonne surprise...
