I dress and we go to pay calls — at the Gavinis', the Canroberts', Poleyff's, the Baronne Legoux's, the Comtesse Duros's. At Mme Legoux's I believed myself in one of Balzac's salons of "the queens of Paris." The most complete elegance. This woman of forty is magnificently beautiful; when we arrived there was only M. Guy de Marcilly, a rather plain young man but looking witty, who is her favourite. If Balzac were alive I would have adored him like God.
Je m'habille et nous allons faire des visites chez les Gavini, chez les Canrobert, Poleyff, la baronne Legoux, la comtesse Duros. Chez Mme Legoux j'ai cru me trouver dans un salon "d'une des reines de Paris" de Balzac. Le tout à fait grande élégance. Cette femfrie de quarante ans est magnifiquement belle, lorsque nous sommes arrivées il n'y avait que M. Guy de Marcilly, un jeune homme assez laid mais l'air spirituel qui est son favori. Si Balzac était vivant je l'aurais adoré comme Dieu.
