Mme de Charette came today — which means that this evening we go to the Duchesse de Fitz-James's reception.

Mme de Charette est venue aujourd'hui, ce qui fait que ce soir nous allons a la reception de la duchesse de Fitz-James.

Very simple — in white, with a braid down the back, looking very young.

Tres simple, en blanc, avec une natte dans le dos, l'air tres jeune.

Little Mme de Sonis was there, very much at ease. A great deal of nerve, truly — for she was introduced to the Duchesse at our house. She very nearly tells us it was she who introduced us there. There are formidable audacities in this world. It is very brilliant — in short it is the best there is in France, the true Faubourg.

La petite Mme de Sonis y etait et tres a son aise. Beaucoup d'aplomb vraiment car elle a ete presentee a la duchesse chez nous. Pour un peu elle nous dirait que c'est elle qui nous a introduit la. Il y a des toupets formidables sur la terre. C'est tres brillant, enfin c'est ce qu'il y a de mieux en France, le vrai faubourg.

Je ne serais pas libre... Et j'aime bien mieux un mariage serbe mais apres l'ambassade... Alors ce serait brillant.
