The author of them would be Mme Mackay — not the enormously wealthy one — Mackay-Bastien.

And here is why. All those society ladies — Cartwright and the rest — were put off; we had not invited them this year, and other people from last year also not invited this year were equally put off, and then our best-known friends.
Et voici pourquoi. Toutes ces dames de la société, Cartwirght etc. ont été décommandées; nous ne les avions pas invitées cette année, et d’autres personnes de l’année dernière non invitées cette année, ont été décommandées également, puis nos amis les plus connus.

La Bari est la femme légitime du frère du roi de Naples, mais ancienne marcheuse de l’Opéra et... Pour la Cartwright je l’avais invitée mais je comptais la décommander d’une façon ou d’une autre pour ne pas m’en faire une ennemie... Mais je raconte cela avec une prolixité de portière, enfin ce qui confirme ces soupçons c’est que chez Mme de Bari devant la Bailleul on a dit que la Mackay est furieuse et jalouse, que Bastien a parlé en termes flatteurs de Mlle Bashkirtseff et qu’il y va beaucoup et qu’elle y prenne garde, car la Mackay est une femme très méchante et capable de tout et qu’elle me croit très dangereuse... Et qu’elle tient à son Bastien. Et que devant plusieurs personnes elle a dit avec dépit que cette soirée ne réussissait pas et qu’il n’y aurait personne. Enfin me voilà avec une histoire Bastien sur les bras. Cet idiot de Bastien a dit ou on a dit qu’il me trouve douée, charmante.. Est-ce que je sais. On inventera quelque infamie là-dessus. En attendant ça m’amuse énormément.

Cartwright is depraved but good-natured, while Stéphanie is dreadfully wicked and of the most vile morality... She is a dreadful woman... Men have said as much to Maman...
