That idiot of an aunt is stubborn as a mule. She refuses to come to Russia because she has to finish that Soulima affair — she was mixed up in it at the age of nineteen, when Georges and Alexandre boxed someone's ears and she was present, and it is called a lawsuit. So — no; it is truly too maddening. As for me, stupidities [sic] enrage me. Fortunately Maman listened to my father — otherwise everything would still be dragging. But what is delightful is that these witty women also say: why did she go there at all! But, one answers them, to be rid of this lawsuit, which is finished and leaves us in peace! Never mind, say they, she need not have gone!
When people are like that there is nothing to say. Only this time it is outrageous, because I am going to look like a young lady travelling alone. In short it is incredible, unheard of, extraordinary, prodigious that one should have such solicitude for everything material and yet not suspect the moral life, or social life, or call it what you will!
For an open window there would be an infernal fuss — yet she would let me depart, that is to say by accompanying me as far as the frontier, as the first time, and giving the journey an air of shiftiness and strangeness.
Oh, how tiresome it is, good heavens, how very tiresome. Oh! they are stupid, they are unaware, they are idiots!!!
