At five o'clock Lönnstadt, Dina, and I are at Émile Bastien's, where he sits for us. I paint him on a small panel — 3 or 4 [inches], I believe.

A cinq heures Lônstadt, Dina et moi sommes chez Emile Bastien qui pose pour nous. Je le fais sur une petit panneau de 3 ou 4 je crois .

I am painting on Bastien's own palette, with his colours, his brush, in his studio, with his brother as model!...

*Je peins sur la propre palette de Bastien, avec des couleurs à lui, son pinceau, son atelier et son frère pour modèle !...*

In short it is a dream — childishness, superstition — the little Swede wanted to touch his palette, I kept some of his old paint, and my hand trembled, and we laughed!... The brother speaks exactly like Gabriel... Something penetrating and pleasant in him...

Enfin c'est un rêve et des enfantillages, des superstitions, la petite Suédoise voulait toucher à sa palette, j'ai gardé de sa vieille couleur et la main me tremblait et nous riions ! ... Le frère parle tout à fait comme Gabriel... Je ne sais quoi de pénétrant et de gentil...

This sitting, which lasted two hours, makes us late for the evening at the Sorbonne where M. de Brazza1 is received as a member of the Geographical Society. He is an intimate friend of the Fitz-Jameses and came himself to bring us tickets — but over a thousand people could not get in; we had the patience to listen from the doorway, and the moment the session ended we went to congratulate the triumphant hero and to greet Mmes de Charette and Gontaud-Biron. Maman believes that young Mlle de Charette is mad about Brazza — possible; they were brought up together.

Cette séance qui a duré deux heures nous met en retard pour la soirée de la Sorbonne ou M. de Brazza est reçu membre de la Société de géographie. C'est un ami intime des Fitz James, il est venu lui-même nous apporter des billets mais plus de mille personnes n'ont pu entrer, pourtant nous avons la patience d'écouter de la porte et si tôt la séance finie nous allons féliciter le triomphateur et dire bonjour à Mmes de Charette et Gontaud-Biron, maman croit que la petite de Charette est folle de Brazza, possible; ils ont été élevés ensemble.

In short, this procures us the honour of remaining in that glorious circle and passing through the privileged doors.

Enfin cela nous procure l'honneur de rester dans ce cercle glorieux et de passer par les portes privilégiées.

Mme de Brazza the mother stood beside her son, both of them on the verge of fainting — all this leaves me cold... I prefer a well-modelled nose.

Mme de Brazza la mère se tenait près de son fils, tous deux prêts à défaillir; tout cela me laisse froide... J'aime mieux un nez bien modelé.
