It is done. We have the house. I am devastated... To leave the Champs-Élysées!!! And then the force of habit...

C'est fait. Nous avons l'hôtel. Je suis navrée... Quitter les Champs Elysées !!! Sans compter l'habitude...

It feels like a comedown. And yet... It consists of vast cellars with kitchen etc. etc. and a billiard room.

Cela me fait l'effet d'une déchéance. Pourtant... Cela se compose de vastes sous-sols avec cuisine etc. etc. et salle de billard.

The premier,1 raised some ten steps above the street, has a vestibule; then, having passed a fine glazed door, one finds an anteroom containing the staircase to the upper floors; to the right a room to be made into a drawing room by piercing an opening or by joining it to a small — very small — room giving onto the garden. A very large drawing room, a dining room, and a garden into which carriages may drive, reached by steps from the drawing room and dining room.

Le *premier* élevé d'une dizaine de marches possède un vestibule puis ayant franchi une belle porte vitrée on se trouve dans une antichambre dans laquelle est l'escalier menant aux autres étages, à droite une pièce dont on fait un salon en perçant une ouverture ou en réunissant cette pièce avec une petite chambre toute petite donnant sur le jardin. Un très grand salon, une salle à manger et un jardin ou les voitures peuvent entrer et auquel on descend par des marches du salon et de la salle à manger.

On the first floor there are five bedrooms with dressing rooms and a bathroom. As for the second, it is mine and consists of an anteroom, two bedrooms, a library, a studio, and a lumber room.

Au premier il y a cinq chambres avec cabinets de toilette et une salle de bain. Quant au deuxième, il est à moi et se compose d'une antichambre, de deux chambres, d'une bibliothèque, d'un atelier et d'une chambre de débarras.

The studio and the library are joined by an immense opening, making a space twelve metres long by seven wide. The light is superb — one has it from three sides and from above. In a word, as rented townhouses go, one could not dream of anything better suited to me. Well, then?

L'atelier et la bibliothèque sont réunis par une immense ouverture, ce qui fait un espace de douze mètres de long sur sept de large. Le jour est superbe, on en a de trois côtés et un d'en haut. En un mot comme hôtel loué on ne peut rien rêver me convenant mieux. Eh bien alors ?

Well — it seems far to me. It is ten minutes by carriage from the Madeleine by way of Malesherbes — in short, it is 30 rue Ampère, on the corner of rue Brémontier, and the house can be seen from the Avenue de Villiers, opposite number 70 of the said avenue.

Eh bien il me semble que c'est loin. C'est à dix minutes de voiture de la Madeleine en prenant par Malesherbes, enfin c'est 30 rue Ampère, au coin de la rue Brémontier et l'hôtel se voit de l'avenue de Villiers, à la hauteur du 70 de la susdite avenue.

And besides, this moving business is as irritating as possible. And to leave this apartment where I have been so peaceful...

Et puis ce déménagement c'est énervant au possible. Et quitter cet appartement où j'ai été si tranquille...

Ah well, too bad — it is done. We signed at the notary's.

Ah ! tant pis, c'est fait. On a signé chez le notaire.
