As it happens, both Gérys came this evening — father and son. There was something patriarchal and slightly awkward about it.# Dimanche 21 mai 1882 Justement ils sont venus ce soir les deux Géry, le père et le fils. Ça avait quelque chose de patriarcal et un peu gênant.
I am afraid they may get it into their heads to ask for me. I hope they will not. For one thing it would be on account of my dowry... So I cannot be loved for myself? I can... but... Gabriel is so sensible... His very sensibleness wins me over in the sense that he inspires nothing in me...
Moi je crains qu'ils ne se mettent dans l'esprit de me demander. J'espère qu'ils ne le feront pas. D'abord ce serait pour ma dot... Je ne puis donc pas être aimée ? Si... mais... Gabriel est si raisonnable... Sa raison me gagne en ce sens qu'il ne m'inspire pas grand chose...
