As it happens, both Gérys came this evening — father and son. There was something patriarchal and slightly awkward about it.
I am afraid they may get it into their heads to ask for me. I hope they will not. For one thing it would be on account of my dowry... So I cannot be loved for myself? I can... but... Gabriel is so sensible... His very sensibleness wins me over in the sense that he inspires nothing in me...
