Poor Father Constantin — he is going to be dreadfully bored, alone with the gloomy M. and Mme Paul. And he adores Maman; he swears he has never loved anyone but her — besides, he has always done everything to live together again... At any rate... In short... For two years it has been a household of lovers.
Maman is kind, though querulous, and tidy — and he is a charming, likeable, funny man, though selfish and abrupt. On the whole I am moved by this late accord, and the poor man going off alone makes me sad.
It has been five minutes and his duties are calling him; as for Maman, she cannot leave me alone — it was all very well when the lawsuit obliged it, but just to go off and leave me abroad with my aunt, after such long absences already. And I — you can well imagine I cannot go and bury myself over there.
This is what that excellent Papa will not understand. It is quite astonishing, for even the poorest parents make sacrifices to take their grown daughters about in society; whereas he, if I allowed him, would leave me to live in the wilderness with a little Poltava and two months of travel a year. As for speaking to him of intellectual needs, society, Paris — useless. So I have never invoked anything other than the necessity of taking his daughter out to find her a husband — he understands that, but as for disrupting his plans for rural life, no.
In short... all these people are kind, but they bore me.
