I have been ill for four weeks and two days now.Jeudi 15 décembre 1881
I put on my tearful scene for the under-Potain, who does not know how to calm me, for, passing from the nonsense, non sequiturs and other exquisite things with which I regale his imagination, I began to complain and to weep real tears, my hair down, stammering childish grievances in the language of a little girl. And to think that I worked myself up in cold blood and did not mean a word of it. Besides, it is like when I happen to play “well” certain parts in comedies: I am truly pale and trembling and I weep — in short, it seems to me I would make a tremendous actress, but I cough and do not have the breath for it at the moment. Monsieur my “father” arrived this morning. Everything is going very well; only Paul’s poor wife is quite upset, sensing in him an indifference bordering on hostility. As for me, I behave properly; I give her four dresses, a jacket and a very fine emerald that Maman gave me and that I have no use for. I regretted it a little afterwards; I could have given it to Dina, who adores jewellery, but... bah.
I do not say that Papa is tiresome — on the contrary, he resembles me a little... in mind as in body (that is a compliment) — but that man will never understand...
Imagine, he has a plan to take us to the country for Easter!! I who... well, no use explaining again... no! It is too much, and the tactlessness too great — with my health, to talk of taking me to Russia in February or March!!! I leave you to judge; let us move on. Not to mention all the rest!!!
Ah! no! I, who refuse to go to the South!... No, no, no, let us definitely say no more about it.
Villevieille and Brisbane, one after the other, come to bring news of the atelier.
Saint-Amand, every other day as usual; disappointed — he thought he would get the post of M. de Courcel, who has been sent to Berlin...
God forgive me, I am giving you the news of society and of the town.
And the fever and the peri-bronchitis and the congestions!...
Ah! Ah! Ah!
Ah ! Ah ! Ah !
