I am desperate not to have left. I gave my father an unprovoked offence and remain here — my summer will be in pieces all the same, since I must go to the waters at the end of June. Instead of spending three weeks here, attending Breslau's medal ceremony, remaining shut in, sad, listless in this Paris where one suffocates — I could have been in the countryside and the change would have been so great; I truly need to get out of this impossible state.
I am an idiot! Oelsnitz weeps and begs me to stay, believing the journey would be my tomb, and that the terrible M. Bashkirtseff would keep me there.
What nonsense!!! And I am weak-willed enough, soft enough, whatever you like, to let myself be influenced!!! I am going to telegraph to the Berlin station to have them wait for me, and I am leaving. For really — until the time comes for the waters, what am I doing here!! I shall always find Tony and his studio again.
