The Gaillards, whose visit we had returned, came round in the evening, and here is the husband's improvisation on Dina and me. [text missing]
I went to see Julian and we talked for a long time, seriously. He says I am doing a foolish thing by going to Russia. "The doctors send you to the South and you head North!" He said things so wise, so sensible, that I am more than shaken. And so that I should not think it is merely a business matter, he is sending me out of Paris to work in the countryside, where it will be warm and I shall be wrapped in air and sunshine all day long.
I must therefore do a large landscape over the summer, with figures — and in winter a studio composition — giving me two very different submissions. And I must follow in nobody's wake, neither Bastien's nor anyone else's (a dig at Breslau) — I am one of those who must remain herself. In short he thinks well of me and always has excellent advice and good encouraging words. And very strict with it — which is why I am obedient. I speak to him almost with an open heart, and I believe he is flattered by it.
And wretched woman that I am, I have something like unconfessed ulterior thoughts of seduction... why? How? To what end? But it lies at the bottom of every feminine nature.
But the thing is — to paint well one must look after one's health!! I know perfectly well. This man who flatly advises me not to go, even though it would please my family — "your family will regret it afterwards" — he said it to Maman at the risk of angering her when she came to fetch me. And indeed if it did me harm... And then my ears — we spoke of them; he is the only one to whom I speak of them, just as he is the only one who speaks to me of Cassagnac. In short, my ears are dreadful... Ah, I am not happy... but I shall take care of myself. I am going to leave — for Allevard, to stay five weeks, which will bring me to July; then spend a month in the forest of Fontainebleau... No — stay in Paris for June until the 15th, leave the 15th, stay at Allevard until 20 July, then a month at Fontainebleau with frequent trips to Paris to show my studies; around 20 August return to the capital, pack one's things, and arrive in Biarritz 1 September; after a month in Biarritz come back here and work with precautions...
And Russia to the devil.
