Saint-Amand came.

Saint Amand est venu.

A lady (a fellow student) whose portrait I am to paint pays for it by posing for a hand study. Tony was adorable — he was about to correct the Jewish student's work when he caught sight of my hands.

Une dame (une élève) dont je ferais le portrait me le paie en posant pour une étude de main. Tony a été adorable; il allait corriger la Juive quand il aperçut mes mains.

"Who did this?"

Qui est-ce qui a fait cela ?

"It is I, Monsieur." "It is very true, very true, very true" — then, after looking at the study once more, he said again:

C'est moi, Monsieur. C'est très vrai, très vrai, très vrai; puis, après avoir encore regardé l'étude, il se remit à dire:

"It is very true, very true, very true" — and after a fresh sitting: "It is very true."

C'est très vrai, très vrai, très vrai; et, après une nouvelle pose: - C'est très vrai.

He looked agreeably surprised — and imagine my joy! At last he sat down in my place and gave me a lesson.

Il avait l'air agréablement surpris, et pensez à ma joie ! Enfin il s'assit à ma place et me fit la leçon.

"It is a good study; you must do others like it — there are charming tones here." I underline that, because of the fellow students who, not knowing what else to say, denied me any ability in colour.

C'est une bonne étude, il faut en faire d'autres comme cela; il y a là des tons charmants; je souligne à cause des camarades qui, ne sachant que dire, me refusaient la couleur.

"Unfortunately it is not quite perfectly drawn, but in the second study that will not happen again — I am sure of it. This finger is too long; that is a mistake one does not make twice. On the whole it is good — there is something good, there is something good." No! I was red and pale at once. Besides — one must see the importance attributed to me at the studio. I am the strongest, and things go so far that I speak almost with unction, like Cassagnac. But do not fear that such triumphs will go to my head.

Malheureusement, ce n'est pas tout à fait bien dessiné, mais, à la seconde étude, cela n'arrivera plus, j'en suis sûr, ce doigt est trop long, c'est une faute qu'on ne fait pas deux fois; somme toute, c'est bien, il y a du bon, il y a du bon. Non ! j'en étais rouge et pâle. Du reste, il faut voir l'importance qu'on me donne à l'atelier, je suis la plus forte et on fait tant et tant que je parle presque avec onction, comme Cassagnac. Mais ne craignez pas que ces triomphes-là me tourne la tête.

All the Kaverines dined here and have just left for the theatre with my aunt.

Tous les Kavérine ont dîné ici et viennent de partir pour le théâtre avec ma tante.

I am happy about my painting, and in general I am better.

Je suis heureuse pour ma peinture et en général je vais mieux.

These hands are painted on a size-6 canvas: the left resting flat on the table; the right holding a pen as if having just paused to re-read. I explain myself poorly, but you understand.

Ces mains sont peintes sur une toile de six; la gauche appuyée, aplatie sur la table; la droite tient une plume comme si elle venait de s'arrêter pour relire. Je m'explique mal, mais vous comprenez.

Amélie is not pleased, but what annoys me is that she copies me in everything she can.

Amélie n'est pas contente, mais ce qui m'ennuie c'est qu'elle me copie en tout ce qu'elle peut.

Studio childishness. No — joking aside, I sense that things are going better in my painting.

Enfantillages d'atelier. Non, blague à part je sens que cela va mieux en peinture.

Gabriel took so long to send the little gifts because my parcel played truant — was opened by his father and finally sent on to the son.

Gabriel a tant tardé à m'envoyer les joujoux, parce que mon envoi a fait l'école buissonnière, fut décacheté par le père et enfin renvoyé au fils.
