Wodzinski accompanies us to the theater where Rochefort's lecture had been announced, but no more Rochefort than on the palm of my hand; we come back empty-handed. Wodzinski goes to the races and we to the Exhibition at the Palais de l'Industrie, to visit the arts applied to industry, and on the first floor the exhibition of the works of the late Th. Couture. We meet old Tchoumakoff, whom we bring back to the house, and with whom we talk painting for two hours while having tea; at half past five the Moreaus arrive.

Wodzinski nous accompagne jusqu'au théâtre où l'on avait annoncé la conférence de Rochefort mais pas plus de Rochefort que sur la main, nous nous en retournons bredouilles, Wodzinski va aux courses et nous à l'Exposition du Palais de l'industrie, visiter les arts appliqués à l'industrie et au premier étage l'exposition des œuvres de feu Th. Couture. Nous rencontrons le père Tchoumakoff que nous ramenons à la maison et avec qui nous causons peinture pendant deux heures en prenant du thé, à cinq heures et demie arrivent les Moreau.

Wodzinski comes to dinner and takes us to hear the Gypsies at Madrid; there, at the first table, is the beautiful Odette with her husband Delattre and Montgommery. She asks me in a whisper if I am marrying Saint-Amand. Potin's gossip is making the rounds.

Wodzinski vient dîner et nous mène entendre les tziganes à Madrid, là à la première table se trouve la belle Odette avec son époux Delattre et Montgommery. Elle me demande à l'oreille si j'épouse Saint Amand. Le potin de Potin fait du chemin.

But that is not the point; on returning home I undress naked and am struck by the beauty of my body as if I had never seen it. I must have my statue made, but how? Without marrying, it is almost impossible. And I absolutely must; I would only have to grow ugly, to spoil... I must take a husband only to have my statue made, but no, the husband may not come for a few years; I must have myself done now. It costs very dear, at least 10,000 francs for the plaster alone, for you can well imagine who will do it: Saint-Marceaux.

Mais il ne s'agit pas de cela, en rentrant je me déshabille nue et reste frappée de la beauté de mon corps comme si je ne l'avais jamais vu. Il faut faire faire ma statue, mais comment ? Sans me marier c'est presque impossible. Et il le faut absolument, je n'aurais qu'à enlaidir, me gâter... Il faut prendre un mari rien que pour faire faire ma statue, mais non, le mari ne viendra peut-être que dans quelques années, il faut me faire faire à présent. Cela coûte très cher, au moins 10.000 francs rien que le plâtre, car vous pensez bien qui le fera Saint-Marceaux.

Le principal c'est l'argent, où prendre 10.000 francs ? Tandis qu'étant mariée je trouverai la somme.
