Mademoiselle Marie del Sarte, who gave me my first sculpture lessons, and her sister dined with us this evening. When paying for the lessons, I gave the young lady a small ring; I owed her at least that --- she charged only twenty francs for four lessons. I was ashamed to give her so paltry a sum. They are two adorable girls; I believe they see good society, as their father was a celebrated figure, the singing teacher Real del Sarte.
Mademoiselle Marie del Sarte, celle qui m’a donné les premières leçons de sculpture, et sa sœur ont dîné ce soir avec nous. En payant pour les leçons, j’ai donné une petite bague à la demoiselle, je lui devais bien cela, elle a compté vingt francs pour quatre leçons. J’avais honte de lui donner une somme si minime. Ce sont deux adorables filles, je crois qu’elles voient du monde bien, leur père a été une célébrité, le professeur de chant Real del Sarte.
The elder is thirty-two, very tall, rather stout, dark with admirable eyes and a radiant complexion, but an air of modesty and piety robs her of the brilliance her beauty ought to have. Magdeleine is twenty-seven; one would take her for twenty-two. Adorably blonde with hair that falls to her knees. Dark eyes, a pure brow, a delicious complexion, fresh and softened by grey tones. A proud nose and that ash-blonde hair, altogether remarkable. Both well-bred, charming, good-natured. I spent a pleasant evening. What ravishing honest natures --- they told me stories of Julian’s kindness and generosity that ought not to surprise one in so refined a man with so delicate a mind. All the same, it is a good mark for the R. P. Julian.1 I gave them tickets for the Chamber yesterday.
L’aînée a trente-deux ans, très grande, assez forte, brune aux yeux admirables et au teint éclatant mais un air de modestie et de dévotion lui enlève le brillant que sa beauté devrait avoir. Magdeleine a vingt-sept ans, on lui en donnerait vingt-deux. Adorablement blonde aux cheveux qui tombent jusqu’aux genoux. Des yeux noirs, un front pur, un teint délicieux, frais et adouci par des tons gris . Un nez altier et ces cheveux d’un blond cendré tout à fait remarquable. Toutes les deux bien élevées, charmantes, bonnes filles. J’ai passé une bonne soirée. Quelles ravissantes natures honnêtes, elles m’ont raconté de Julian des traits de bonté et de générosité qui ne devraient pas surprendre chez un homme aussi fin et ayant un esprit aussi délicat. C’est égal, c’est une bonne note pour le R. P. Julian. Je leur ai donné des billets pour la Chambre hier.
They know the Audiffrets and made my blood boil by saying that Mme Audiffret has an enormous number of connections and goes out in society a great deal. It is only I who am shut in, I know. Elles connaissent les Audiffret et m’ont fait bouillir en disant que Mme Audiffret a énormément de relations et va beaucoup dans le monde. Il n’y a que moi d’enfermée, je sais. Cela changerait maintenant qu’il serait trop tard, comme jeune fille, je ne puis plus rien. une demie ligne
