Tony was very kind --- advice, exhortations, encouragement; my portrait is not bad at all, the hair is good. At last!
Tony a été très gentil, des conseils, des exhortations, des encouragements; mon portrait n’est pas mal du tout, les cheveux sont bien. Enfin !
I am twenty-one years old and this morning I found a white hair, and I am blonde.
J’ai vingt-et-un ans et je me suis trouvée ce matin un cheveu blanc et je suis blonde .
Madame Boyd invites Mme Bashkirtseff to a matinee today. Upon receiving this card, I write to Berthe to ask what the occasion is and why an invitation to Maman while (a line and a half cancelled) I am alone with my aunt. Berthe replies that her mother thought Maman had returned and was inviting me along with her, but had not invited my aunt as she did not know her. First of all, this is not true: they were introduced two years ago, they have not seen each other since, but they know each other; and besides, it means nothing since many people have been invited whom Berthe alone knew.
Madame Boyd invite Mme Bashkirtseff à une matinée pour aujourd’hui. Ayant reçu cette carte j’écris à Berthe pour demander ce qu’il y aura et pourquoi une invitation à maman tandis que (une ligne et demie cancellée) je suis seule avec ma tante. Berthe me répond que sa mère croyait maman de retour et m’invitait avec elle, mais n’avait pas invitée ma tante ne la connaissant pas. D’abord cela n’est pas vrai, elles ont fait connaissance il y a deux ans, elles ne se sont pas revues, mais se connaissent et ensuite cela ne signifie rien puisqu’on a invité beaucoup de personnes que Berthe seule connaissait.
Under these conditions, I do not wish to go, but Mme Gavini arrives and is cross because I made her get dressed up for nothing. Annoyed, tormented, displeased, vexed, pitiful, I go. You see, these are the things that diminish one. I was received as usual; Lord Paget, the son-in-law of Mme Boyd, who has recently inherited the title of Marquis of Anglesey and several million in income, stood in the first salon beside his new wife (the marriage took place at three o’clock at the embassy). The very beautiful Mme Woodhouse, a large and very distinguished crowd. Mme Woodhouse is from the highest society in London. Madame Gavini finds acquaintances and tells me that it must be quite grand for Mme de Rothschild (Adolphe) to trouble herself to come. As for acquaintances, the Martelets, Fargman --- I no longer recall.
Dans ces conditions là, je ne veux pas y aller mais Mme Gavini arrive et se fâche parce que je lui ai faire faire toilette en vain. Ennuyée, tourmentée, mécontente, vexée, pitoyable, j’ y vais. Voyez-vous ce sont de ces choses qui vous rapetissent. On m’a reçue comme d’habitude, lord Paget, le gendre de Mme Boyd qui a hérité depuis peu d’un titre de marquis d’Anglesey et de plusieurs millions de rente se tient dans le premier salon auprès de sa nouvelle femme (le mariage a eu lieu à trois heures à l’ambassade ). La très belle Mme Woodhouse, une assistance nombreuse et très belle. Mme Woodhouse est de la haute société de Londres. Madame Gavini trouve des connaissances et me dit qu’il faut que cela soit grand pour que Mme de Rothschild (Adolphe) se dérange, et viennent. En fait de connaissance les Martelet, Fargman, je ne me rappelle plus.
I am not pleased to have gone; it is because of Gavini... who annoys me. The boxes and the little gifts... a friendship of whim, of fancy --- I have had enough of that. This friendship weighs on me... all the more so because this lady does not seem entirely reliable, and she has not been useful to me in Parisian society. She takes me to the Opera in a grand box, we take her to the Bois. She introduces her regulars: former prefects, or other ousted Bonapartists, or young men like Multedo... in terms of men it is tolerable... not great, but name me a single salon whose doors she has opened for me. None. It is the Baroness de Poilly who is a true friend; she has done everything in the world for Mme de Bernardaki, and if she has not succeeded, it is because Benardaky is truly too beautiful. And the Audiffrets --- they too owe almost everything to Mme de Poilly, and Mme de Poilly is well-established, very rich, and does it out of kindness. Those Audiffrets will always make my blood boil.
Je ne suis pas contente d’être allée, c’est à cause de la Gavini... Qui m’embête. Les loges et les petits cadeaux... amitié de caprice, de fantaisie, j’ai assez de cela. Cette amitié me pèse... d’autant plus que cette dame ne parait vraiment pas assez sûr et elle ne m’a pas été utile pour le monde de Paris. Elle m’emmène à l’Opéra en grande loge, nous l’emmenons au Bois. Elle présente ses habitués, d’anciens préfets, ou d’autres bonapartistes dégommés ou des jeunes gens comme Multedo... encore en fait d’hommes cela va... pas trop mais citez moi un salon dont elle m’ait ouvert les portes. Aucun. C’est la baronne de Poilly qui est une bonne amie, elle a fait tout au monde pour Mme de Bernardaki et si elle n’a pas réussi, c’est que la Benardaky est vraiment trop belle. Et les Audiffret, c’est encore à Mme de Poilly qu’elles doivent presque tout et Mme de Poilly est posée, est très riche et le fait par bonté. Ces Audiffret me feront toujours bouillir.
In the evening at the circus with Saint-Amand and Cerny; it irks me --- not “bores”, irks is the word. All those cocottes. It is grubby. But it amuses my aunt; the poor woman has had little enough happiness without my depriving her of these rare and utterly childish pleasures, like the circus or the Bois. The other day I wanted to go home early and she would have liked to walk a while longer; I insisted, but afterwards I felt bad about it.
Le soir au Cirque, cela m’embête, ce n’est pas ennui, c ‘est embête qu’il faut dire avec Saint Amand et la Cerny. Toutes ces cocottes. C’est sale. Mais cela amuse ma tante, la pauvre femme n’a déjà pas été trop heureuse pour que je la prive de ces rares et archi-enfantins plaisirs comme le Cirque ou le Bois. L’autre jour, j’ai voulu rentrer de bonne heure et elle aurait voulu se promener encore, j’ai insisté mais après cela m’a fait de la peine.
Saint-Amand sees us home, comes in with us, and plays the horse, the clown, the gymnast, recites, sings, and bewilders Coco, who barks at each of his sudden movements.
Saint Amand nous reconduit, entre avec nous et fait le cheval, le clown, le gymnaste, récite, chante et ahurit Coco qui aboie à chacun de ses mouvements brusques .
