I spent the evening between Caillas and Cerny, to whom I had let slip that Caillas knows the secret of making eyes appear larger and of dyeing hair. She was putting questions to him, and he, having been forewarned, made it very amusing. His friend Beaunels is apparently in love with me, or at least he was on the verge of falling for me in earnest. Upon which he went to consult his friend Caillas, who gave him the wise advice not to come and see me. Better a few days' heartache than an infatuation which, given who you are, might lead to heaven knows what — a suicide, perhaps...
Yes, it is serious, apparently.
