Saint-Amand came, anxious about my health.
Soutzo dined. Pelikan has left. The Princess de Fitz-James came.
As for me, I am re-reading the past and am passionately absorbed in it. I remember when Cassagnac used to enter — it was like a blinding flash. I could not define either his manner or my impressions... My whole being went to him when I held out my hand, and then I felt myself swept away, gone, stripped of my bodily envelope — I felt wings, and then a dreadful terror at seeing the hours pass so quickly! And I did not understand!! It is a pity that the nature of these writings does not allow me to isolate the remarkable moments. Everything is confused together. And besides, I affected, to tell the truth, to occupy myself with everything so as to show that [Word blacked out: I existed] beyond Cassagnac. Only when I wish to relive these events I am startled to find them surrounded by all the rest. But is it not so in life?
And yet there are things, events, people, that one would wish to isolate and lock away in a precious casket with a golden key...
"When you feel yourself superior to him, he will no longer dominate you!" says Julian.
Was it not the idea of having his portrait to paint that drove me to work! Well — I will find him again... And now fear takes hold of me that I will not find him, if he were to die, or who knows what... For when, concession by concession, one accepts everything and says to oneself: since I accept everything, this cannot escape me — well, something unexpected happens and it escapes you all the same. He did not love me. Very well. He is married. Very well. What else? What can still happen? How can he separate himself from me still further? How can I lose him more completely?
Soutzo has returned — let him play piquet with my aunt. I shall fall asleep thinking of my brother...
When I re-read his phrases, his letters, I am stirred as if it were happening now.
You see, it is impossible for me to indicate the pages where one would re-read Cassagnac, for since 1876 when I first knew him he has run through all four of those years and he is to be found everywhere — despite all the other pygmies.
