When people speak in a low voice, I cannot hear!!! This morning Tony asked me if I had seen any Peruginos, and I said no without understanding.
And as someone came to tell me afterward, I extricated myself — badly extricated — by saying that indeed I had never seen any, and that in short it was better to admit one's ignorance.
Besides, Tony was very pleased with my head. I am painting Thellinge, leaving the model aside. Breslau sent to ask my permission to paint my model; I generously consented, and we offer the watchful atelier the touching spectacle of our two friendships side by side. They are really childish; I mock all of that.
Tony said it is very well begun, that I need only continue. We appear to be having a competition with Breslau, and I have beaten her so far, at least (we shall resume the week after, when it has dried). This amuses the whole shop, and everyone wants to pose for me.
I infuriate good Breslau by saying my painting has found a buyer at 1,500 francs and that I am hung in the perimeter gallery: "It is sad," I say, "but just. My painting is not remarkable — I admit it all the more readily since it is quite natural: two years of work, a first exhibition, and fifteen days to execute..." Besides, the administration has been relatively fair: they have hung in that famous gallery only the worst things — there is not a single clean canvas...
