Saint-Amand, to whom I had written a note concerning the placing of my painting, arrived around one o'clock, and having written in my presence to the proper authority, proceeded to sing, to declaim, and then to imitate Mme Turr. He is quite a good reciter — certain scenes from Hernani or Ruy Blas and especially Musset's verses — this kept me until half past two.
Saint Amand auquel j'avais écrit un mot touchant le placement de mon tableau est arrivé vers une heure et ayant en ma présence écrit à qui de droit s'est mis à chanter, à déclamer puis à imiter Mme Turr. Il est assez bon diseur, certaines scènes de Hernani ou de Ruy Bias et surtout des vers de Musset, cela m'a retenue jusqu'à deux heures et demie.
In short, my painting will either be badly placed and unnoticed, or in a prominent position — and then it will bring me trouble: they will say there is nothing but pretension and a bid for notoriety, signal weakness, who knows...
En somme mon tableau sera mal placé et inaperçu ou bien en vue et alors il m'attirera du désagrément, on dira qu'il n'y a que prétentions à tapage, faiblesse insigne que sais-je...
