Saint-Amand, to whom I had written a note concerning the placing of my painting, arrived around one o'clock, and having written in my presence to the proper authority, proceeded to sing, to declaim, and then to imitate Mme Turr. He is quite a good reciter — certain scenes from Hernani or Ruy Blas and especially Musset's verses — this kept me until half past two.
In short, my painting will either be badly placed and unnoticed, or in a prominent position — and then it will bring me trouble: they will say there is nothing but pretension and a bid for notoriety, signal weakness, who knows...
