We go to the Queen's, who is very gracious. I am still looking for a heap of things for my painting.

Nous allons chez la Reine qui est très gracieuse. Je cherche toujours un tas de choses pour mon tableau.

This evening at the Theatre Francais the premiere of Daniel Rochat by

Sardou. A veritable event. We have an excellent box for six. A superb house, people and the government. The Jew beside Mme Adam, who is with General Turr's wife (the sister of Mme Rattazzi), who is little or not at all received since she has been going in that society. But the Jew, we had met him on arriving; he even bowed very low, and then ogled very often. Mme Gavini is with us until eleven o'clock; afterwards she goes to Behir's. The box to the right belongs to Countess Walewska, the one to the left to... I no longer know; we looked as if we were together, all the more since old Madame Gavini was chatting with her neighbors. It looked very well. Only I was not dressed up enough, a dress of wool muslin, too much a day dress. It made me warm and annoyed me.

Sardou. Véritable évènement. Nous avons une excellente loge de six places. Une salle superbe, du monde et le gouvernement. Le Juif à côté de Mme Adam qui est avec la Générale Turr (sœur de Mme Rattazzi) qu'on reçoit peu ou pas depuis qu'elle va dans ce monde-là. Mais le Juif nous l'avions rencontré en arrivant, il a même salué très bas, et puis a lorgné très souvent. Mme Gavini est avec nous jusqu'à onze heures après elle va chez Béhir. La loge à droite est à la comtesse Walewska, celle de gauche à ... je ne ne sais plus, nous avions l'air d'être ensemble d'autant plus que la mère Gavini causait avec ses voisines. Cela faisait très bien. Seulement je n'étais pas assez habillée, une robe de mousseline de laine trop robe de jour. Cela me donnait chaud et m'ennuyait.

Naturally Arnaud is there; he came twice to chat with actresses seated in the balcony just below our box. For a moment I thought he was going to kiss one of them, so far did he lean down, but the illustrious idiot merely deposited his hat with his head beside the woman. A fine exercise in front of everyone, on such an evening. Besides, it is already dirty enough to come speak to these women, one of them being the one he took driving the other day in the Bois, Mlle Bianca. Not long ago Gambetta was seen in a box on an opening night with a little woman; in a screened box, it is true, but everyone in the pit could see while passing. As for the play, I must see it again; it seems to me there are tedious lengths, Genevan conversations; it has a Swiss look.

Naturellement Arnaud est là, il est venu deux fois causer avec des actrices assises au balcon juste au dessous de notre loge. Un instant j'ai cru qu'il allait en embrasser une tellement il s'est baissé, mais l'illustre idiot s'est borné à déposer son chapeau avec la tête, à côté de la femme. Joli exercice devant tout le monde, un soir pareil. Du reste c'est déjà assez malpropre de venir parler à ces femmes, l'une d'elles et celle qu'il a promenée l'autre jour au Bois, Mlle Bianca. Et moi qui espérais que c'était une femme du monde... républicain. Ils se conduisent vraiment d'une manière... étrange ces républicains. Il n'y a pas longtemps on a vu Gambetta dans une loge un soir de première avec une petite femme; en loge grillée [sic] c'est vrai mais tout ceux du parterre pouvaient voir en passant. Quant à la pièce il faut que je la revoie, il me semble qu'il y a des longueurs ennuyeuses, des conversations génevoises, ça a l'air suisse.

But there was so much shouting, applauding, hissing, approving, and protesting that one heard only half... The hero is a great orator, a sort of Gambetta, an atheist; the heroine an Anglo-American Protestant girl, very liberal, republican, but a believer. You see what this subject can produce at the present time.

Mais on a tant crié, applaudi, sifflé, approuvé et protesté qu'on n'entendait que la moitié... Le héros est un grand orateur, espèce de Gambetta, athée; l'héroïne une jeune fille anglo- américaine protestante; très libérale, républicaine mais croyante. Vous voyez ce que ce sujet peut donner à l'heure actuelle.

At the exit, whichever way I turn, the Jew everywhere. I am obsessed by it.

A la sortie de quel côté que je me tourne le Juif partout. J'en suis obsédée.

It seems Juliette Lamber greeted Maman from her box.

Il paraît que Juliette Lamber a salué maman de sa loge.

In descending the staircase she was in front of us, and I maneuvered so as not to meet. Arnaud at the exit, but I act as if he did not exist, and in fact he does not exist for me since nothing can be made of him.

En descendant l'escalier elle était devant nous et j'ai manœuvré de façon à ne pas nous rencontrer. Arnaud à la sortie, mais je fais comme s'il n'existait pas et au fait il n'existe pas pour moi depuis qu'on ne peut rien en faire.

The memory of the blue fox troubles me less, but it is still annoying that this stupid fop imagines... worn-out subject.

Le souvenir du renard bleu me tracasse moins mais c'est tout de même fâcheux que ce fat stupide s'imagine... sujet usé.
