I have made sketches for my Question du divorce. And in the evening we go to the theatre with the Gavinis. It seems that the other evening we made an enormous impression at the Opera. Any number of people are asking and making inquiries:
J’ai pris des croquis pour ma question du divorce. Et le soir nous allons au théâtre avec les Gavini. Il paraît que l’autre soir nous avons fait un effet monstre à l’Opéra. Un tas de gens demandent et s’informent:
“It is no use,” says old Mother Gavini, “I am willing to introduce you, but they will not marry you; I shall have you invited to the party these ladies will give, but I warn you: nothing doing.”
- C’est inutile, dit la mère Gavini, je veux bien vous présenter mais elles ne vous épouseront pas; je vous ferai engager à la fête que ces dames donneront mais je vous préviens: rien à faire.
“I had a good mind,” she adds, “to add: because you are starvelings with your 15,000 francs a year.”
- J’avais bien envie, ajoute-t-elle d’ajouter parce que vous êtes des meurs de faim avec vos 15.000 francs de rente.
