Tolmatcheff to lunch.

Filippini has not yet had his second sitting; I sent him away today to go for a walk. At the Gavinis' we are introduced to M. de Saint-Amant. The famous dilettante, artist, connoisseur, launcher of prima donnas and society women, the friend of all pretty women; he follows fashion or makes it.

Filippini n'a pas encore eu sa 2ème séance, je l'ai renvoyé aujourd'hui pour aller me promener. Chez les Gavini on nous présente M. de Saint-Amant. Le fameux dilettante, artiste, connaisseur, lançeur de prima donna et des femmes du monde, l'ami de toutes les jolies femmes, il suit la mode ou la fait.

They had spoken much of me to him, and I noticed that he was examining the subject closely.

On lui avait beaucoup parlé de moi et j'ai remarqué qu'il examinait fort le sujet.

Madame Adam did not come. This makes me take everything in horror. I am furious that Soutzo is dining at the same time as the Mouzays. The women would not bother me, but the young man bores me. Mme Gavini says I would do well to take him. If I had everyone else's ideas, yes, but...

Madame Adam n'est pas venue. Cela me fait prendre tout en horreur. Je suis furieuse de ce que Soutzo dîne en même temps que les Mouzay. Les femmes cela ne me ferait rien mais le petit m'ennuie. Mme Gavini dit que je ferais bien de le prendre. Si j'avais les idées de tout le monde, oui, mais...

At the moment I am saying aloud that I shall marry at twenty-four.

En ce moment je dis tout haut que je me marierai à vingt- quatre ans.

"When will you be twenty-four?" he asked me this evening.

Quand aurez-vous vingt-quatre ans ? m'a-t-il demandé ce soir.

"In four years."

Dans quatre ans.

"And it is only then that one may aspire..."

Et c'est alors seulement qu'on pourra aspirer...

"Yes, to that honor."

Oui, à cet honneur.

"And if I presented myself?"

Et si je me présentais ?

"We shall see about that in four years."

Nous verrons cela dans quatre ans.

"I am in despair."

Je suis désespéré.

The Viscountess de Brimond, the political woman of our building, is very affable. She chatted with Maman the other day on the staircase, and this evening she greeted me.

La vicomtesse de Brimond, la femme politique de notre maison, est très avenante. Elle a causé avec maman l'autre jour dans l'escalier et ce soir elle m'a saluée.
