Lundi, 20 octobre 1879

Yesterday we had to dinner Berthe and her husband, M. de Morgan, Bojidar and Miloradovitch. The latter recounted to Maman the unkindnesses done to him at Gavronzi, the distinguished Pacha and Michka Eristoff. Oh! the scoundrels! Fortunately it did nothing to me! And my dear father then! This evening I hardly spoke to him but I maneuvered so as to appear very much a woman of the world and gracious to all. It is I believe what touches this little fool the most.

Hier nous avons eu à dîner Berthe et son mari, M. de Morgan, Bojidar et Miloradovitch. Ce dernier a raconté à maman les misères qu'on lui a faites à Gavronzi, le distingué Pacha et Michka Eristoff. Oh ! les canailles ! Heureusement que cela ne me faisait rien ! Et mon cher père donc ! Ce soir je ne lui ai presque pas parlé mais j'ai manoeuvré de façon à paraître très femme du monde et gracieuse pour tous. C'est je crois ce qui touche le plus ce petit imbécile.

Il a 300.000 francs de rente pour sûr et une position brillante, des parentés et des alliances *très chic* et malgré moi je voudrais bien faire sa conquête... Oh ! sans que cela me coûte un geste par exemple et... en somme je suis toujours du même avis, je crois que je l'accepterais... peut-être et je crois que cela me rendrait malheureuse.
