They came to fetch me at the atelier at four o’clock and we went to the Bois; I was very tired. We saw Doenhoff, who called out to ask whether we are still at the same address. And then, while Mme Randouin was telling us of her approaches to M. Perrin to get a box at the Français on Tuesdays, Audiffret came up and carried off the address, 34 avenue Montaigne. He is a decent fellow, all in all, and if he comes to see us I shall be neither glad nor bored.
After that it was Alexis’s turn; he is leaving for Mulhouse to see his friend Koechlin, who is dying; as he was driving alongside us after getting back into his carriage, I was able to say some harmless little nonsense to him about Joseph; with him we always talk about Joseph.

Besides, I saw him, Joseph, at the end of the day, on horseback in the avenue de l’Impératrice. He is an antique equestrian statue, a conqueror riding his charger into the conquered city. An Assyrian bas-relief. How elegant a man must be not to look ridiculous in our modern clothes [half a page blank] in such attitudes! Broad shoulders, a slim, slender waist, a small head, and in every movement something of the grace and majesty of antiquity. I have never seen anyone sit a horse so well, for I do not admire the fashion of imitating jockeys, who are small, stooped, puny and have legs like triumphal arches. He had his fist on his hip; M. de Janzé affects the same attitude too, but M. de Janzé looks exactly what he is, a man of fashion who spends his life between the London season, Paris and the races, playing the fashionable English games and paying court to women.
Joseph may try as he likes to be a common man of fashion, he will always be saved by his natural bearing. And to think that if Oelsnitz had not come for me twenty minutes late I would have known him for several months already... No, really, that figure on horseback is quite remarkable. And Don Carlos, too! He made eyes at Dina and me. From now on I shall always look at him; it is not dangerous, he is a married king. A great many people, all in all.
