I went to church because I am starting work again tomorrow.
I am weary. All these people are coming to dine with us this evening and not one amusing face among them. Hecht is likeable, but I take him only as a beginning — I told him so; I want other republicans... just to see.
Hecht has telegraphed that an absolutely unforeseen circumstance prevents him from coming. He had gone to Ville d’Avray, to Gambetta’s, though Gambetta is said to be in London. There is some business behind it to do with the Simplon railway... We know what certain friendships are for.
So the menu I had composed missed its mark:
Oysters Jules Ferry Soup à la Présidence Vol-au-vents à l’Opportuniste Fish 4 September, Blanqui sauce Fillet with truffles à la Républicaine Fowl with cauliflower à la Maufras (a gentleman Hecht detests)
Game à la Séminariste (recently some young seminarists walking in the Meudon woods were hit by No. 4 shot fired from an invisible and so far unknown gun.
The republican papers claim it was a poacher who wanted to shoot a rabbit or to frighten off these young men who were spoiling his sport.
The conservative papers have turned it into a running joke and ask where is the poacher?, offering fanciful clues every day.
Salad Municipal Council Vegetables à la Joseph Bombe à l’Amnistie Nihilist Dessert Fruits of Ville d’Avray.
During the meal the Marseillaise will not be played.
