Since yesterday at one o'clock in the night we have been in Dieppe.

Depuis hier à une heure de la nuit nous sommes à Dieppe.

Krishaber left me the choice between Mont-Dore and the sea. Mont-Dore is far, Dieppe is quite near, the Karageorgevitches are in Dieppe. And then we were ready to get into the omnibus when Blanc arrived. Blanc! come with us! I said. I should be glad to but it is very far from Mont-Dore, if it were Dieppe...

Krishaber me laissait le choix entre le Mont-Dore et la mer. Le Mont-Dore est loin, Dieppe est tout près, les Karageorgevitch sont à Dieppe. Et puis nous étions prêtes à monter en omnibus lorsqu'est arrivé Blanc. Blanc ! venez avec nous ! ai-je dit. Je veux bien mais c'est bien loin de Mont-Dore, si c'était Dieppe...

"Well then, let it be Dieppe, it will be amusing."

— Eh bien va pour Dieppe, ce sera drôle.

I hope it will be amusing. During the four hours the journey lasted we told each other stories about Mother Couvelet which served as a pretext [for all conversation] jumping from one topic to another in the most senseless fashion.

Je souhaite que ce soit drôle. Pendant les quatre heures qu'a duré le voyage nous nous sommes raconté des histoires sur la mère Couvelet qui a servi de prétexte [à toute conversation] à bâtons rompus des plus insensées.

And Blanc, whom we mock quite openly, who takes himself by the chin and tells us with a victorious air: "yet this rascally physique of mine has seduced many women." But seeing our wild laughter he turned it into a joke and repeated the phrase and gesture from time to time. We now call him nothing but "polisson de physique."

Et Blanc, dont nous nous moquons tout à fait, qui se prend le menton et nous dit d'un air vainqueur: "pourtant ce polisson de physique a séduit bien des femmes". Mais voyant notre rire fou il le tourna en plaisanterie et répétait de temps en temps la phrase et le geste. Nous ne l'appelons plus que "polisson de physique".

Are all these seaside towns the same? I have been to Ostend, to Calais, to Dover and I am in Dieppe. It smells of tar, of boats, of ropes, of oilcloth. It is windy, one is exposed on all sides and one feels in distress. It smells of seasickness. What a difference from the Mediterranean. There one can breathe, there there is something to admire, there one is well.

Est-ce que toutes ces villes de mer sont les mêmes ? J'ai été à Ostende, à Calais, à Douvres et je suis à Dieppe. Cela sent le goudron, le bateau, les cordages, la toile cirée. Il fait du vent, on est exposé de tous côtés et l'on se sent en détresse. Cela sent le mal de mer. Quelle différence avec la Méditerranée. Là on respire, là il y a quoi admirer, là on est bien.

And there it does not smell of all these ugly things of here. I already prefer a good little nest of greenery like Soden, Schlangenbad, and as Mont-Dore must be.

Et là cela ne sent pas toutes ces vilaines choses d'ici. J'aime déjà mieux un bon petit nid de verdure comme Soden, Schlangenbad et comme doit être le Mont-Dore.

I came here to breathe! Ah! yes indeed. No doubt outside the town and the port the air is better. All these northern seas do not please me. And from all these hotels here one only sees the sea from the fifth floor. O Nice, O San Remo, O Naples! O Sorrento! You are not vain words, you are neither exaggerated nor profaned by the travelers' guides, you are truly beautiful and divine!

Je viens ici pour respirer ! Ah ! bien oui. Sans doute hors la ville et le port l'air est meilleur. Toutes ces mers du nord ne me plaisent pas. Et de tous ces hôtels d'ici on ne voit la mer que du cinquième étage. Ô Nice, ô San Remo, ô Naples 1! O Sorrente II! Vous n'êtes pas de vains mots, vous n'êtes ni exagérées ni profanées par les guides des voyageurs, vous êtes vraiment belles et divines II!

We are very elegant. Yesterday, in Paris, I went to the Bois with Berthe and we met Hecht who greeted me in the most amiable fashion.

Nous sommes très élégantes. Hier, à Paris, je suis allée au Bois avec Berthe et nous avons rencontré Hecht qui m'a saluée de la façon la plus aimable.

Blanc stays here until Saturday.
