I am very busy and very content. I used to torment myself because I had leisure; I can see that now. For twenty days or three weeks I have been working from eight until noon and from two until five, and back home by half past five, I work until seven, and then a few sketches or some reading in the evening or a little music, and by ten o'clock I am fit for nothing but bed. Such an existence leaves no room for thinking that life is short and that my youth is passing before an easel or a book.
Come now, you big silly — since there is no other way...
Music, evenings, Naples...
These are things that unsettle one... let us read Plutarch.
