At the London House, Paul saw Des Perrières and the Comte Scotti, who advised him to write a letter. For here is the situation. Seeing nothing come of it we would have left, and Eristoff would have the pretext of saying that Paul insulted him and then fled. So Paul had the idea of sending someone to tell him that he is staying at the Hôtel du Parc and will remain in Nice until Saturday. These gentlemen did not approve of this idea and opted for the letter that follows — which is, alas, by me.
Au London House, Paul a vu Des Perrières et le comte Scotti qui lui ont conseillé d'écrire une lettre. Parce que voici la chose. Ne voyant rien venir nous serions partis et Eristoff aurait le prétexte de dire que Paul l'a insulté et qu'il s'est sauvé après. Alors Paul a imaginé de lui envoyer quelqu'un pour lui dire qu'il loge à l'hôtel du Parc et qu'il reste à Nice jusqu'à samedi. Ces messieurs n'ont pas approuvé cette idée et ont opté pour la lettre que voici et qui est hélas ! de moi.
Marcuard came to the box and then Barnola. Lewin, being at Marcuard's box (next to ours), spoke to me, so I was obliged to reply. On leaving I suffered again at seeing all these people who know one another, who are carefree and at ease.
Marcuard est venu dans la loge puis Barnola. Lewin étant chez Marcuard, (à côté de nous) m'a parlé, j'ai dû lui répondre par conséquent. A la sortie j'ai de nouveau souffert de voir tous ces gens qui se connaissent, qui sont gais et tranquilles.
