I ordered the carriage for nine o'clock and, accompanied by my lady-in-waiting Mlle Oelsnitz, went to visit Saint-Philippe, Saint-Thomas d'Aquin and Notre-Dame. I climbed all the way to the top and visited the bells, like an Englishwoman. Well — there is a Paris that is utterly adorable: old Paris. One can be happy there, but only on the condition of avoiding the boulevards and the Champs-Élysées, all that is new, the fashionable quarters I detest, which get on my nerves. But over there, in the Faubourg Saint-Germain, one feels quite differently.

J'ai ordonné la voiture à neuf heures et accompagnée de ma demoiselle d'honneur Mlle Oelsnitz je suis allée visiter Saint-Philippe, Saint-Thomas d'Aquin et Notre-Dame. Je suis montée tout en haut, j'ai visité les cloches, comme une Anglaise. Eh bien voilà, il y a un Paris adorable, c'est le vieux Paris; et l'on peut y être heureux mais à condition d'éviter les boulevards et les Champs-Elysées, tous les nouveaux, les beaux quartiers enfin que j'exècre, qui me donnent sur les nerfs. Mais là-bas, dans le faubourg Saint-Germain on se sent tout autrement.

Oh! Just look at the École des Beaux-Arts — it makes one want to cry out.

Why can I not go and study there. Where else can one receive so complete an education as there! I went to see the Prix de Rome exhibition; second place was won by a student from Julian's. Julian is very pleased.

Pourquoi ne puis-je aller étudier là. Où peut-on avoir un enseignement aussi complet que là I! Je suis allée voir l'Exposition des prix de Rome, le second a été gagné par un élève de chez Julian. Julian est très heureux.

If I am ever rich, I shall found a school for women.

Si jamais je suis riche, je fonderai une école pour les femmes.

Monsieur and Madame Coubé came to lunch and we took them to the Bois.
