At noon everyone was gathered, and Georges prevented the ceremony from taking place; it was put off until six.

A midi tout le monde était là et Georges a empêché la cérémonie d'avoir lieu, on la remit à six heures.

At six o'clock the body was transported to the underground chapel, where it will await the arrival of the sons and whatever arrangements are made. The vault made an impression on me — but I did not weep; I wept only on the first day.

A six heures le corps a été transporté à l'église souterraine où il attendra l'arrivée des fils et les dispositions que l'on prendra. Ce caveau m'a impressionnée, mais je n'ai pas pleuré, je n'ai pleuré que le premier jour.

My aunt can barely stand; she has had to restrain that monster's rages and has received boot-kicks to the side and to the stomach... To give you some idea: Mouzay goes to the concierge and makes a scene; the concierge replies that he can do nothing, and that the police commissioner merely told him: "When one of them has been murdered, we'll come up." He nearly had cause to come today — for but for someone (I can no longer remember who) entering the dining room, my aunt would have been strangled.

Ma tante se soutient à peine, elle a eu à contenir les fureurs de ce monstre et elle a reçu des coups de bottes dans le côté, dans l'estomac... pour vous donner une idée écoutez: Mouzay va trouver le concierge et lui fait une scène, alors le concierge répond qu'il n'y peut rien et que le commissaire de police s'est contenté de lui dire: "quand il y en aura une d'assassinée, nous monterons". Il a failli monter aujourd'hui car sans je ne sais plus qui, est entré dans la salle à manger, ma tante serait étranglée.

Poor Dina — Grand-papa has left her 50,000 roubles in a bank draft in Maman's name. But she will not see a sou of it; without doubt the brothers will go to law. Nicolas was already spreading word in the kitchen¹ that his father had been delirious and singing — when since our return he could not even raise his voice! Only in these last two days did he lack the strength, fading away little by little...

Pauvre Dina, grand-papa lui a laissé 50.000 roubles, dans une traite au nom de maman. Mais elle n'en verra pas un sou, sans aucun doute les frères feront un procès. Nicolas répandait déjà le bruit à la kitchen que son père avait le délire et chantait; quand depuis notre retour il ne pouvait même plus crier ! L'acte a été fait quand nous habitions encore les Champs-Elysées; d'ailleurs grand-papa n'a jamais perdu connaissance, témoin la lettre de Multedo. Seulement ces deux derniers jours il n'avait plus de forces et s'éteignait peu à peu...
