Sunday, 18 August 1878

This morning we were still at Soden. I had promised five hundred prostrations if I found Grand-papa alive. I kept my promise. He is not dead, but he is scarcely better. All the same... here is my Ems cure wasted for nothing. I hate Paris!
Nothing of note happened on the 15th of August — a simple mass, nothing more. Outside of Soden, Schwarz and Gans are nothing at all. Everything is back in place in my sitting room; beside the skeleton one sees the bas-relief in progress, and the Soden tableaux lying scattered everywhere.
This apartment is disagreeable to me. Having left it and then returning makes it seem like a detested home. Walitsky died here, Pincio was lost here, and Cassagnac will return no more. It is childishness of me to affect to confuse all these misfortunes. I denied God as the men I do not love deny my heart.
