After an exchange of telegrams we are going to Paris. For all that this seems anticipated and natural, I should be devastated if some dreadful misfortune were to occur...
We take our leave of all our friends, and tomorrow morning at five — farewell Soden, Schwarz, and Gans. Since the Cancrines arrived we have dined at a separate table and been together the whole day. I should very much like these friendly relations not to fade, should we happen to meet again.
That Jew must be a sorcerer or a spy or the devil himself. It is impossible to be followed more relentlessly. He has become the nightmare of us all; this morning we were on the Coubes' balcony when he came and sat down on a chair opposite, and so, to throw him off our trail, we pretended to be cold and went inside, slipping out through a back door and through the yard to Hanner the confectioner — and we had barely arrived before the Jew came out of the same shop; he had left his mother there to hold a place. You cannot imagine how disgusting, insinuating, fixed, obstinate, smiling, and vile his gaze is! He horrifies us all; he has been spying on us from the moment he arrived in Soden. At Hanner's, a white-haired old man was taking his coffee — my heart clenched; I thought of Grand-papa, I am distressed at the mere thought... and at the same time I think of the impression I shall make when... It is dreadful.
Thilenius spoke to me of the Gans' sadness at the Coubes', and promised me goose feathers, and Schwarz's moustache. And Coubé invited him to come and eat the tongue of the Jewish woman upstairs who coughs all day long. He maintains she will cough her tongue up one of these days, and the wretch describes how it will fall out... and so on.
I retract the insanities I dared to write and desire only one thing — that God forgive me for them. I shall not erase them, because... everything must be there, but I condemn them, I despise them, and I beg God to pardon me. I believe I begin to understand that God does not wish to be spoken to about trivialities... though this is contrary to the idea I had of Him... but this evening I have no time.
