Berthe — she is my nightmare! She made me promise again to come and fetch her. A nude woman was posing.

I again spent most of the time giving her a lesson.

J'ai de nouveau passé la plupart du temps à lui donner une leçon.

She absolutely wants to come back tomorrow. So it has not shocked her too greatly — yet she left the room when Julian came in and the nude woman was on the platform.

Elle veut absolument revenir demain. Donc cela ne l'a pas trop choquée, pourtant elle est sortie de la chambre lorsque Julian est entré et que la femme nue était sur la table.

She speaks of nothing but embassies and society, and invites me to the dancing parties at the Japanese embassy — and then to the balls of Prince de Hohenlohe, the German ambassador.

Elle ne fait que me parler d'ambassades et du monde et m'invite à venir aux sauteries de l'ambassade japonaise. Puis aux bals du prince de Hohenlohe, ambassadeur d'Allemagne.

— I do not know them.

— Je ne les connais pas.

— Have yourself introduced by your ambassador.

— Faites-vous présenter par votre ambassadeur.

— Dear Berthe, it would be useless — neither Maman nor my aunt will go anywhere. Grand-papa is too ill and they do not care for society. They would be frightened at the very idea of going to these grand balls or of making connections, and Maman would immediately say: my father is so ill — and instead of nursing him I would be going out — oh, no. For you young ladies it is different; it is your grandfather, and besides you are young, you cannot be expected to sacrifice yourselves.

— Chère Berthe ce serait inutile, ni maman ni ma tante n'iront nulle part. Grand-papa est trop malade et elles n'aiment pas le monde. Elles seraient effrayées à la seule idée d'aller à ces grands bals ou de se créer des relations et maman dirait tout de suite que : mon père est si malade et au lieu de le soigner je sortirais oh ! non. Vous autres jeunes filles c'est différent, c'est votre grand-père et puis vous êtes jeunes, vous ne pouvez pas vous sacrifier.

— But then you will come with me and my sister?

— Mais alors vous viendrez avec moi et ma sœur ?

— I do not even know — but I think it might be managed.

— Je ne sais même pas, mais je crois que cela se pourrait faire.
