Madame de Fayet has come again to express a slight hesitation — she does not dare to bring a Royal Highness just like that. She invites us to take a cup of tea at her house on Thursday; the object being to have us there. People say she is not worth much.
Let us reason. If nothing comes of it, it should not interest me — and in fact I do not care. If on the contrary something does come of it, it would destroy my artistic future, which I do not want. In any case I do not care, and should like to remain tranquil, since I am settled, determined, since I have begun a thing. But here is the devil wishing to lead me astray — uselessly. I shall do nothing either for or against, from indecision, and also because I adore my trade, which promises me so beautiful, so rewarding, so dignified an existence. The devil wishes to trouble me and make me run after the Highness, who will either bring me to settle down or slip through my fingers. He will not slip through my fingers because I shall not try to catch him — but it will look that way. As for staying as I am... hm... after the Medal of Honour at the Exposition, after some success, I do not say no; but for the moment, I do not wish it.
It is not prudent... at the first discordant note, at the first domestic annoyance, I should repent of it — that is true. Ah! Go to the devil and leave me in peace.
I went to the theatre — it was very amusing, one laughed all the time; time wasted, which I regret.
Maman is at Doubelt's.
Madame Kanschine has come. She is a woman of society, rich and correct.
I worked badly this week! I had taken poor paper, I had no place. A thousand Galutas and one Saëtone — that is bad.
There would be plenty of studio intrigues to recount, but I take the studio on its serious side and occupy myself with nothing else — the rest would be beneath me.
I regret that evening; I did not show myself off and I did not study. I laughed, that is true, but this satisfaction within serves me nothing — therefore it is disagreeable to me, since it gave me no real pleasure. One often laughs because everyone laughs, because the piece is laughable, but one is not amused.
