My terrible past!...

Mon terrible passé !...

Even now it torments me. For every time I think of something done or still to be done, I am reminded of something similar or approaching it — and so shameful, so sad!

Même à présent il me tourmente. C'est que chaque fois que je pense à quelque chose de fait ou à faire, je me rappelle de quelque chose de semblable ou d'approchant et de si vilain de si triste !

The present is going well. We are good comrades and people no longer restrain themselves from saying silly things in my presence.

Le présent va. Nous sommes bonnes camarades et on ne se gêne plus pour dire des bêtises en ma présence.

This tone and certain vulgar things shock me a little — but the good-fellowship, the artistic spirit, saves everything. They travesty proverbs and words like Mistigri,17 and it is always fresh and amusing.

Ce ton et certaines choses communes me choquent un peu mais le côté bon garçon, artistique sauve tout. On travestit les proverbes, les mots, comme Mistigri et c'est toujours neuf et amusant.

Mistigri is a character in Balzac's play Le Faiseur (also known as Mercadet) — or more likely a reference to the card game character — associated with scrambling and misquoting phrases for comic effect. Marie uses "like Mistigri" to mean mangling proverbs for fun. ↩
