The bitterness grows sharper still. I have only to open my mouth for someone to cry: "Ah! do be quiet — there she goes, grumbling again, there she goes, furious — don't speak before her!" During the day this put me in a fury and caused me a hundred kilograms of bad blood because I was containing myself as best I could; and in the evening it makes me want to weep.
Grand-papa is like a man waking from a long sleep who has naturally lost the habit of everything. During the journey he wanted to direct operations, shouted at the guards, grew impatient, and refused to understand that there are rules to which everyone submits.
We go with him to the celebrated oculist Golezowsky.
As my eyes were causing me anxiety I asked his advice; it appears I am short-sighted and, moreover, have a nervous over-excitation — a weakness connected with the lacrimal canal.
Be reassured: my eyes and eyelids are not red at all.
They continue to annoy me with affected incomprehension of why I do not want to live in Nice — and to amuse and distract myself go to Schlangenbad.
- It is very cheap there.
I spare you the storms this raises — silent storms, needless to say.
That is why I prefer to be with my aunt — at least when she is with me I am alone.
Why does my mother do this? Why enrage me, make herself detested, make me suffer!
Why?
Look, it is stupid — but I weep over it!
Fortuné is here; I have ordered him a livery. And at the tailor's! You should have seen how everything in the world was done to exasperate me!
Why this deliberate pretence of stupidity or gross indifference that irritates me so much! What pleasure, what interest does it serve?
And they say they love me! These are women who love nothing — who do good out of weakness, who adore me out of habit, and above all out of idleness and posturing.
Oh! yes, I am quite alone! It is not that I am very unhappy about this in particular, but it takes from me the wretched resources I thought I had at my disposal to improve my situation.
What is vile is to lie to oneself, to lie to outsiders, to lie to me! They adore me... yes, yes — only this adoration causes me more grief than... since I am shedding tears over it like an idiot, all while telling my woes to this paper that drinks my ink as Torlonia drinks vermouth.
The fact is, they have quite accepted the idea that I can remain as I am!! The fact is, they keep silent so as not to be forced to do anything! The fact is, they ask nothing better, provided one leaves them in peace!!!
But that is dreadful!!
Yes, I need to encourage myself.
All through myself, all for myself, all within myself. What do I care for the opinions of these stupefied creatures who torture me! It is merely a matter of knowing clearly what I want, and I shall do it. Only, it is no doubt more difficult than if I had nothing but good will around me. What I have is nothing but a willful resistance — cowardly, useless, irritating, stupid!!
Forgive me, my God — but why do they do it?

Likely Victor Galezowski (1832–1907), Polish-French ophthalmologist and founder of the Revue clinique d'oculistique.
Schlangenbad: a modest spa town in Hesse, Germany, frequented by the German middle classes; the suggestion would have struck Marie as depressingly unglamorous.
