All night I am pursued by three serpents that coil round me, bite me, and which I finally manage, with unimaginable difficulty, to cut into pieces and crush.

Antonelli seemed to preside over this dreadful struggle. There is no doubt some charming slander lurking there.

It is the first truly hot day. Savitch came to watch me paint. Afterwards we were at the Skating, where there was no one but Vigier and three Russians and, except for the instructor, not a single man. Soroka comes no more.

C'est la première journée chaude, Savitch est venu me voir peindre. Ensuite nous étions au Skating où il n'y eut que Vigier et trois Russes et, excepté le professeur, pas un homme. Soroka n'y vient plus.

I was so thirsty that I had to buy a bottle of champagne — I drink it very rarely and only on a whim. It is strange: I am not at all bored here; the smallest thing is enough to make us laugh. Lise's speech defect — she cannot pronounce the letter r — is an entire entertainment in itself; one composes sentences expressly for her, such as this:

J'avais si soif que je dus acheter une bouteille de champagne, j'en bois très rarement et par caprice; c'est bizarre je ne m'ennuie pas du tout ici, si peu de chose nous suffit pour rire; le défaut de prononciation de Lise qui ne sait pas dire £ est tout une affaire, on lui compose des phrases comme celle-ci par exemple :

"Les touas camaouades Laoudéel"29 etc. etc. — as she begins with all r's replaced — Walitsky swoons with laughter, and we fall to talking of Melissano; then, warming gradually, Dina rises to her feet and it all ends in a tarantella. I felt like drinking something extraordinary: Lise and I went to make chocolate in the gas kitchen where Maman makes her jams; we drank the chocolate while Mme Kondareff lamented this convent existence — a true sérail with Walitsky as its eunuch. Then we made the dogs howl, then I went to see Grand-papa — and, having finally exhausted all these occupations, I went to read, play Neapolitan songs, and at last, feeling very tired, I fell to chasing Rosalie with... live fleas taken from Prater's back.

Les trois camarades Larderei, Bernardaki et Grottaminarda raisonnent du Théâtre Français en buvant trente-trois verres de Roederer. Et elle commence par dire : Les touas camaouades Laoudéel etc. etc. Walitsky se pâme, et nous nous mettons à parler de Melissano puis, s'échauffant graduellement, Dina se lève et cela finit par une tarentelle. J'avais envie de boire quelque chose d'extraordinaire, avec Lise nous sommes allées faire du chocolat dans la cuisine à gaz où maman fait ses confitures; puis on a pris ce chocolat pendant que Madame Kondareff se lamentait de cette vie de couvent, un vrai sérail avec Walitsky pour ennuque. Puis nous avons fait hurler les chiens, puis j'ai été voir grand-papa et, ayant enfin épuisé toutes ces occupations je suis allée lire, jouer des chansons napolitaines et enfin me sentant très fatiguée, je me mis à poursuivre Rosalie avec... des puces vivantes prises sur le dos de Prater.

After which I carefully washed my hands and scrubbed my nails.

Après quoi je me suis soigneusement lavé les mains et brossé les ongles.

And now...

Et maintenant...

Tomorrow it will be only three weeks since I arrived in Nice. It feels like three months — three years.

Il n'y aura que trois semaines demain que je suis à Nice. On dirait trois mois, trois ans.
